A Wedding Guest List
Many years ago a young man began thinking of marriage. He was nervous, but he knew he wanted a life partner. He made a list of his ideal characteristics and started looking. He went out of his way to meet new girls, and finally one beautiful young girl stole his heart. He worked his way into a relationship with her, and to his joy, she returned his friendship. They fell in love. One night she accepted his proposal for marriage. Their families were thrilled, and the news quickly spread among their friends.
They were beside themselves with joy as they began to plan their wedding. They chose a date. They contacted a minister. They talked about flowers, candles, a photographer, the ceremony and food. Who would they invite? They started with their parents, grandparents, relatives and closest friends. They added their work associates. Then the young man said something interesting to his fiancé. “What would you think is we invited Jesus? Let’s add him to the wedding list and send him a formal invitation – just like we invite everyone else.”
They did! Jesus came to the wedding and happy feast in the little town of Cana of Galilee. When Jesus attends a wedding, you never know what will happen. What happened at this wedding is recorded for us in John 2. Jesus performed his first recorded miracle at this wedding reception – turning water into wine!
This young couple obviously knew Mary and Joseph and their son, Jesus – now a man in his 20’s. Jesus was working with his father as a carpenter in the town of Nazareth – close to Cana. Mary apparently knew the family well, because she felt responsible to keep things going well at the reception feast. When she saw the wine had run out and the feast was not near finished, she went to Jesus for help.
Jesus wants to attend our weddings, live in our homes and help us build happy families. He wants to turn water into wine – that is, to transform ordinary relationships into very special ones. A Christian marriage has the presence of Jesus Christ in it, filling the house and making our relationships spiritual and special. Let’s invite Jesus to be a part of our families today. He promises to turn the ordinary into extraordinary. He promises to fill our homes with joy. He promises healthy, happy families when He is our Lord. Is the name of Jesus on your guest list?
None of us are perfect as individuals – nor are our marriages perfect. As we work together to maintain our love and a strong marriage, our homes will be a good environment for growing and happy children.
