Substitute
Several years ago I sat on a plain wooden chair at a plain wooden desk. There were ink stains that could not be removed. At that very desk – in England, C.S. Lewis penned the book read around the world, The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. A fantasy book, written to capture the imagination of children, this book shouts truths behind the imagery that intrigues the most intellectual minds. Edmond has been enslaved by the White Witch. He had been foolish, rebellious, evil, traitorous, and had fallen under her power. When the Great Lion, Aslan, came to rescue him, the wicked witch reminded him of the Deep Magic that was written on the Table of Stone – that every traitor belongs to her. She claimed a right to the blood of every sinner! Aslan speaks privately with the White Witch and to the amazement of all, she releases Edmond. Later that night, Aslan surrenders himself to the White Witch. His magnificent mane is shaved off. He’s ridiculed, beat, spat on and tied to the Table of Stone. The White Witch sharpens her knife, and plunges it into Aslan’s heart. The great lion is dead! Aslan’s friends, Edmond, Lucy and Susan, watch and weep from a safe distance. The next morning they creep to the Table of Stone to collect Aslan’s body. To their amazement, the Stone Table is broken and Aslan’s body is gone! Suddenly they turned and find Aslan alive, shaking his magnificent mane and smiling at them. They hug and kiss him, weeping with joy. They ask him, “Aslan, what does this mean?” Aslan replies, “It means that though the witch knew the Deep Magic, there is a magic deeper still which she did not know. Her knowledge goes back only to the dawn of Time. But if she had looked a little further back, into the stillness and darkness before Time dawned, she would have … known that when a willing victim who had committed no treachery was killed in a traitor’s stead, the Table would crack and Death itself would start working backwards.” 2000 years ago, Jesus went willingly to the cross for my treachery – and for yours. The Table Stone of Satan’s strategy was destroyed by our Lord’s resurrection. You see, Satan to was a created being and did not know God’s infinite plan to free you and me from the guilt of our treachery. This is what we celebrate at Easter. No created being can change God’s eternal plan. This is the joy we teach our children. None of us are perfect as individuals – nor are our marriages perfect. As we work together to maintain our love and a strong marriage, our homes will be a good environment for growing and happy children.
