Strong marriages make happy families
Dr. Norman Wright, a psychologist and family counselor living in California said, “If a mother and father are really satisfied with their marriage and are giving to one another, they have a lot to give to their children. Children can sense if their parents really love each other. They can see them caring for each other, encouraging each other, building up each other. Children can rest comfortably in the security of knowing their parents’ marriage is strong.”
Some elements of a strong marriage that Dr. Wright states will ensure a healthy and happy home are:
- Both husband and wife are free to be who they are. Neither one is dominated by the other, and both feel secure because of the other’s support. Both have the opportunity to be themselves; both can develop their own unique qualities.
- Both husbands and wives have learned to express their feelings and emotions, and are free to communicate deeply and openly with each other. This sets a good model of communication for their children.
- Time is allotted for nurturing the marriage. Men, do we still date our wives? Do we make each other feel they are the most important person in our lives? Do I give my wife the gift of undivided attention to her every week? Our children will be secure in this type of happy family.
- There is a healthy expression of sexuality. Our children should see that their parents treat each other with love and affection and can talk about sexuality without embarrassment or disgust. They will know they can ask questions and get an honest answer.
- Both husband and wife encourage each other. Children love to see their parents supporting each other – never in competition with each other.
- Husbands and wives are able to express differences of opinion and resolve issues. When we can solve problems and deal with conflict in a healthy way, we help our children learn the difference between disagreeing and behaving disagreeably.
- Families are strengthened when husbands and wives are spiritually united. It is good for parents to share a strong faith in God and share spiritual truths as long as we can do it without preaching.
None of us are perfect as individuals – nor are our marriages perfect. As we work together to maintain our love and a strong marriage, our homes will be a good environment for growing and happy children.
