SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
AWANA helps the local church:
- To Bring children and their families from the community to church.
- To share the Gospel of Jesus Christ in such a way that it is easy for children and young people to understand.
- To offer biblical instruction that complements Sunday School curriculum.
- To give children the opportunity to make friendships that are honorable to Jesus Christ.
- To teach children to be loyal to their local church and their country.
- To prepare young people to be future leaders in the church.
- To give church members the opportunity to serve the Lord through the AWANA program.
DOCTRINAL STATEMENT
AWANA’s doctrinal focus is the Gospel of Grace. Salvation is a gift of God to us, which we can simply accept by faith, or reject. The death of Jesus Christ on Calvary 2,000 years ago is the complete work that makes it possible for people to be reconciled to God. A person does not need to do anything more to receive eternal life than to believe that Jesus died in their place. Once the individual accepts the gift of God’s salvation, they can be sure that God will never change His mind. In the same way, nobody can “buy” his/her salvation by doing good and neither can they lose their salvation by committing a sin, no matter how bad. Their salvation is secure.
ORGANIZATION
AWANA reaches their objectives through clubs created by the local church. The clubs meet once a week. Each weekly meeting is divided into 4 different time periods:
Game time: 30 min.
Song time: 15 min.
Devotional time: 30 min.
Handbook time: 30 min.
The following is a list of the clubs and ranks according to age group:

Journey/Antorchas: 11-12 years old

Trek/Juveniles: 13-16 years old
GAME TIME
This period is dedicated to fun and physical activity that always attracts kids. They can use their energy in a constructive way through games especially designed for their age group.
HANDBOOK TIME
This time concentrates on teaching and memorizing the Word of God. The club divides into small groups (5 children per group), each supervised by a leader. A leader works with each child to help them progress through the handbook. They are required to memorize each verse without error.
DEVOTIONAL TIME
The club meets to sing praise songs and hear a biblical message that is especially adapted to their age group and to hear and share testimonies with their club mates. During this time, the child will hear the Gospel of Christ and learn to grow in their spiritual life.
INCENTIVES
One important part of the AWANA program is the incentive system. The key to success of a good program is motivating the clubbers. Each element of the system is designed to attract kids to the club.
UNIFORM
AWANA has its own uniform with the AWANA insignia and each age group has their own special uniform. The uniform serves to give kids a sense of group acceptance. The clubber has to earn the uniform by working through the AWANA handbook. The uniform also serves to attract children because of its bright colors.
PRIZES
Almost the entire incentive system consists of prizes that correspond to each age group and each handbook. These prizes are buttons and patches that are especially designed to put on a sash or ribbon. When a child collects all the prizes, it is an impressive sight!
OLYMPICS
The AWANA Olympics is a time for clubs from different churches to compete in games based on the games used in AWANA club time. It is a once a year event that has competitions between local churches on different levels of ability.
BIBLE COMPETITIONS
Instead of physical activity competitions, Bible competitions are tournaments based on biblical knowledge. The questions are based on Bible verses and biblical truths that are found in the AWANA handbooks.
One advantage of this type of competition is that it requires intensive memorization of Bible truth.
This gives clubbers the opportunity to learn their handbooks better and apply the Word of God in their lives.
MINISTRY PHILOSOPHY
The AWANA organization has grown with dizzying speed over the past 58 years. It started as a ministry to neighborhood kids by a church in Chicago, Illinois. From the start, this small ministry began to fulfill its vision of reaching children throughout the entire world. This vision has become a reality through AWANA International (www.awanainternational.org) which promises to help start clubs around the world in order to help local churches evangelize their nations.
The AWANA club program is well organized, has years of experience and is doctrinally solid, which can benefit any evangelical church that wants to grow and establish a more effective ministry. The AWANA materials are attractive, well designed, well written and translated into several languages. Any mature Christian adult can become a leader. The materials are easy to obtain and understand, and they make it easy to start an AWANA ministry in your church.
Children and youth can serve as a bridge of communication to their parents and other adults. In this way, AWANA can help the church grow and serve their community with a more effective ministry.
